Choose the Right Envelope Size and Style for Your Material

The right envelope size would depend on what you’re going to put in it. For example, invitation cards with a dimension of 4” x 6” would need an A6 (4.75” x 6.5”) envelope. Notice how the right envelope is always a little bigger than the content? This is to allow expansion in case its content is thick. This extra space also makes it easier for the recipient to open and pick the card out of the envelope.

Here are the different standard envelope sizes and styles commonly used with some of their applications:

3.5” x 6” up to 6” x 12” Legal Size — Is also known as business and correspondence size. It is usually elongated in shape. It is mostly used for letter-folded inserts such as legal transaction papers, letterheads, and corporate letters.
4.75” x 6.5” up to 12” x 15.5” Booklet and Catalog Size—Constructed with a side or center seam, booklet- and catalog-sized envelopes are especially designed for heavy weight materials such as annual reports, catalogs, booklets, and other promotional tools.
2.125” x 3.625” up to 5.5” 7.75” Baronial Envelope Size—Is a size normally used for invitation cards, greeting cards, and other formal specialty cards and inserts. It is mainly recognizable through its deep pointed flap.
5” x 5” up to 9.5” x 9.5” Square Size— Commonly used to attract attention because of its unusual shape for an envelope. It is also commonly used for invitations, greeting cards, and specialty cards as well.
4.375” x 5.75” up to 6” x 9.5” Announcement Size
Also known as the A-style envelopes, these are the popular envelope sizes and styles. These are commonly used for greeting cards, invitations, photographs, small booklets, and a lot more.

The function of the envelopes with respect to their sizes is not limited to the applications listed above. The key is to remember that there should be an extra space allowance inside the envelope for possible inserts and for easy pick-out. Choose the right size for your envelope pritting needs. A matching envelope and insert makes a more presentable material.
